A really amazing historie ! Thank you very much for this document. A interesting POD for a another time line. Vichy armed by Britain who fight the german invasion of the south France with an operation anvil in the end of 1942 !

Thanks for this astounding information.
I think this planning was kept at a strategical level. Indeed, how could the British supply weapons (and not only small arms, but guns, trucks, etc) to the French in metropolitan France (and what about the training) without the Germans or Italians noticing it ? Landing these supplies in North Africa would have been of little help.

BTW, I've moved the topic into the "Other Uchronies" section.

I just listened to the documentary tonight (if you go to the link you should find another one taking you to a pod cast so you can listen to it yourself).

It seems that the plan wasn't to arm the French before the invasion, but to undertake to re-equip (and supply trainers) in the immediate aftermath. My understanding of the idea is:

* Allies invade with French co-operation (presumably this would incclude keeping the ports intact and facilitating things)

* Allied armies push on and fight the inevitable German response while Vicy French army re equips

* Vichy French (or National French as they'd refer to themselves) Army joins the allies and fights the Germans.

Il y au eu en 1940-41 et sans doute 42 des contacts officieux, mais faits "sur ordre" ou au moins avec l'assentiment des hautes autorités de Vichy, entre des envoyés de ce gouvernement et le gouvernement britannique. Le "délégué" passait par l'Espagne et le Portugal, avec des papiers en règle, et revenait ensuite. Le cas le plus connu est la "mission Groussard" de juin juillet 1941. Il serait maintenant intéressant de savoir "qui" a été envoyé à Londres en décembre 1941, mais ça ne va pas être facile à trouver !

La date en elle-même est aussi significative : Vichy envoie quelqu'un à Londres en même temps que Darlan négocie à tout va avec les Allemands pour la collaboration à outrance. Le double jeu déséquilibré cher à Vichy est en oeuvre une fois encore. Et si Churchill n'a pas été mis dans le coup cette fois-ci, il y a eu bien des circonstances où lui-même n'a pas informé de Gaulle de ce qu'il savait, comme pour Torch ou Overlord.

La question du rééquipement de l'armée "d'armistice" a d'ailleurs été centrale après Torch. Et le peu de matériel fourni aux Français lors de la campagne de Tunisie l'avait été par les Anglais.

Some unoffical contacts happened between Vichy France officials and the UK Government in the period 1941-42. This one (december 1941) is interesting because at the same moment, Vichy was going a lot of steps further in the collaboration process with the Germans. Every time the Vichy govenment was giving more and more to the Nazis, he started a small attempt to "make something" with the Allies.
