I'm a romanian aviation enthusiast, found this site looking for something rather different (initially, US aircraft deliveries to France in 1940, did found everything i wanted to know on the subject here) but i must say as a what-if fan myself, the scenarios put forward here are most fascinating.

About Carol and Romania, i haven't read the relevant timeline yet, but imo it is very likely Stalin will still demand Moldova as soon as France has been clearly defeated on the continent (he will issue his demands perhaps late July or early August). Will the Vienna Diktat happen too as in OTL (only a bit later)? If it does then it's almost certain Antonescu will emerge as the leader as in OTL, Carol would have ran away, and Antonescu will be as eager as in OTL to go to war against the soviets to get Moldova back.

As for the volte-face, the romanians will 10 out of 10 be far more inclined to surrender to the allies rather than the soviets, so if the allies reach the border of Romania in the south, and the soviets are in Moldova, they will probably try to hold the soviets with everything they got for as long as they can, and offer little to no resistance against the allies occupying Romania. Of course german troops will still be in Romania, so it will be quite a mess. But in the FTL, if Yalta still happens it's possible Romania is still be sold to the soviets.

As a personal note, i have some doubts the german-russian war will start in 1942, as you probably know there is literature stating that Stalin might have been preparing his own strike against Germany in summer 1941! If that is true, i just can't see Stalin just waiting to be attacked, especially when the germans are having a lot more problems, trying to support Italy against the combined french-british offensive. On the other hand, probably Hitler still thinks that if he attacks the soviets (his ideological arch-enemy) and defeats them, them he can force some sort peace with UK and France, so he could still probably attack at first opportunity in 1941, if he would not be beaten to it by the soviets!

Many years ago (I don't remember if it was on this forum or another), it was clearly explained that Stalin, although not a man of peace, was certainly NOT preparing an attack of his own. Not before a few years, at least.
In 1939, his hope was a long and protracted war between Germany and the Allies, along the Rhine for example. In 1940, OTL or FTL, the victory of Germany over France is a very disturbing new for him. He has no desire to begin a struggle against Germany.
And after the Winter War, he's fully aware his army is not - not yet - able to sustain a fight against the Wehrmacht.
